How the apples-to-apples rating works
• Overall vacation quality and setting: 30%
• Fit for 11 people, including shared space and practical sleeping: 25%
• Beach, pools, and activities for adults and three 15-year-olds: 20%
• Value relative to the expected total: 15%
• Drive-time fairness across Valley Stream, Lanesville, and Washington: 10%
Price normalization: The attached Ocean City guide quoted four-night totals for July 30-August 3. The starred prices above convert those figures into rough five-night planning ranges so they can be compared with the rest of the list. They are not live quotes and a fifth night may price differently.
Bottom line: La Mer remains the best overall experience. Madison is still the strongest value beach choice. The most important new contender is the Grand Hotel, which gives you true Boardwalk oceanfront access at an estimated price below La Mer, but its eight-bed configuration must be resolved. Gateway is the best new choice for hotel quality, while The Spinnaker is the strongest new budget play.
Booking checks: Confirm exact bed types and legal occupancy, request rooms together or on the same floor, verify elevator/accessibility needs for the 90-year-old traveler, and obtain the final after-tax total including parking and cancellation terms.
